Spielvogel Memorial 2004

                                                                                                          (Reporting by Patrick Cook).

The 2004 Spielvogel Memorial tournament, a 7 round swiss, saw a very
pleasing entry of 20 players, including defending champion FM Simon
Rutherford. The event also sees the return to competition chess of twice
Ballarat chess club champion Peter Miitel.

Charlie Andrews tried the solid, conservative Stonewall against Simon Rutherford, but to no avail as Simon won in his usual efficient manner. Jing

Jia finished an excellent 2nd after defeating Geoff Davis, while Scott Stewart ventured the unusual Bird's Opening (1. f4 ) against Bas van Riel

and got the better of middle game complications to win.

John Lavery wheeled out the Trompowsky Opening (fashionable amongst English players in recent years) versus Rob Bailey who played sound,

sensible chess to draw comfortably. Mitchel Bailey completed a fine tournament by beating Judd Madden's English Opening.

Patrick Cook once again blundered in a winning position against Jamie Brotheridge and his immediate draw offer was accepted after some thought by

Jamie. Clint Stewart picked up a free point after the hapless Peter Miitel failed to show.

John Abson was unable to cope with Peter Lumsdon's French Winawer, while James Eldridge hit Darren Young with a King's Gambit to score the full

point; and Michael Schreenan's Blackmar-Diemer Gambit (1. d4...d5 2. e4!?) backfired against John Frangakis.

So, once again, FM Simon Rutherford has won a Ballarat tournament with a picket-fence score and reinforced his position as club champion.

11 Frangakis, John [2] 0:0 BYE

Simon Rutherford maintained his lead in the tournament after a comfortable

win over Jamie Brotheridge's Sicilian Defence, while Jing Jia kept in touch

after knocking over Bas van Riel with the double-edged Alekhine Defence.

Mitchel Bailey confirmed his arrival in the clubs big league by

convincingly drawing against John Lavery's sharp Benko Gambit, and Charlie

Andrews' peculiar handling of Judd Madden's French Defence (1. e4 .. e6 2.

f4!? ) proved good enough for the full point.

Patrick Cook was heading for a convincing win when Geoff Davis spotted a

swindling oppurtunity to snatch a draw. Scott Stewart crushed Peter Lumsdon

with his now regular Leningrad Dutch.

Rob Bailey accounted for Darren Young, Clint Stewart defeated Michael

Schreenan and Peter Miitel finally remembered how to win at the expense of

John Abson.

John Lavery took on Simon Rutherford's favourite defence, the Caro-Kann, but

to no avail, eventually losing the exchange and the end game. Mitchel Bailey, emulating Simon, played the Caro-Kann against Jing Jia and was unlucky to lose a drawish looking end game after 42 moves.

Scott Stewart wheeled out the ancient Bishop's Opening against Charlie Andrews, but lost after going astray in the middle game complications (see game below). Bas van Riel surprised his opponent, Patrick Cook, with the Sokolski Opening (1.b4 ) and won an interesting encounter.

Judd Madden eventually beat Rob Bailey's Dutch Defence after Rob declined the oppurtunity to win 2 pieces for rook, while Jamie Brotheridge brushed aside Clint Stewart's Dutch, also.

John Abson and Geoff Davis won their games, as expected, versus Michael Schreenan and Darren Young respectively

How did white continue (and win)?

The top board clash between the clubs No.1 and 2 ranked players, Simon Rutherford and Bas van Riel, saw another win for Simon, further emphasising his dominance of the tournament. Jing Jia defeated Charlie Andrews to keep in touch with the leader, while John Lavery lined up as Simon's next opponent after a comfortable win over Judd Madden.

Mitchel Bailey showed that his earlier wins were no abberration by defeating the experienced Peter Lumsdon in a very nice miniature (see above). Peter Miitel's poor

run of form continued when he left a piece en prise against Darren Young. Patrick Cook returned to his cautious ways with a draw against his tormentor of recent times, Scott Stewart, while Jamie Brotheridge and Geoff Davis scored the full point against James Eldridge and Clint Stewart respectively.

Results Round 3- 5/2/04:

 1 Jia, Jing          [2]      0:1     Rutherford, Simon  [2]
 2 Van Riel, Bas      [2]      1:0     Lavery, John       [2]

10 Schreenen, Michael [0]      0:1     Bailey, Rob        [0]

Mitchel Bailey, undeterred by his Round 2 defeat, scored another excellent
win, this time over Geoff Davis. Peter Miitel further demonstrated his
rustiness when he inexplicably offered a draw, 2 pieces up!!, against John
Frangakis.
Patrick Cook finally registered a win when traditional rival Peter Lumsdon
sacificed a piece for an imaginary attack in a Pirc Defence. Simon
Rutherford continued his dominance of the club by defeating the ambitious
junior Jing Jia, while Bas van Riel set up a showdown with Rutherford by
beating the strong and solid John Lavery.
John Abson played a very nice attacking game against Clint Stewart, but
somehow went astray and lost. Charlie Andrews accounted for Jamie
Brotheridge, while Judd Madden, Scott Stewart and Rob Bailey all scored
wins.

Results Round 2- 29/1/04:

 1 Rutherford, Simon [1] 1:0 Davis, Geoff [1]
 2 Bailey, Mitchel [1] 0:1 Van Riel, Bas [1]

10 Schreenen, Michael [0] 0:1 Madden, Judd [0]

Round 2 saw a couple more surprising results. Darren Young held Patrick
Cook to a draw with careful play in an Exchange French, while James Eldridge
defeated Peter Miitel.
Mitchel Bailey tried, but failed, against Bas van Riel, Jing Jia cruised
past John Abson, while Simon Rutherford fought off the feisty Geoff Davis.
John Lavery overcame dangerman Jamie Brotheridge, while Peter Lumsdon,
back from holidays, scored the full point against fast improving Clint
Stewart.
The rest of the games went predictably, with the higher rated players
notching up wins.

11 Young, Darren [.5] 0:0 BYE
The tournament got off to a dramatic start with the club heavyweights
struggling against the supposedly weaker club minnows. Patrick Cook suffered
a hallucination in a promising position, giving up the exchange for no
compensation against Clint Stewart, and was fortunate to draw after Clint
returned the favour.
Mitchel Bailey benefited from a misplayed combination by Scott Stewart to
score the biggest upset. James Eldridge played a French Tarrasch very well
to reach a dead drawn position, but lack of end game experience resulted in
him being outplayed by John Lavery.
In a game played at break-neck pace, Jamie Brotheridge wiped Peter
Miitel's QGA off the board, while John Abson bowled over Charlie Andrews in
another upset result.
Bas van Riel eventually overcame strong resistance from Rob Bailey and
Simon Rutherford scored the full point against Judd Madden.
Two players, Peter Lumsdon and Darren Young, took a half-point bye.
