Book Review by CC-SIM Tim Runting Red Letters - The Correspondence Chess Championships of the Soviet Union By Sergey Grodzensky & Tim Harding. Published by Chess Mail Ltd, 2003 ISBN.0953853659 Tim Harding is now well established with his Chess Mail publications and his latest offering is a wonderful collection of games from a past era, the Soviet Union, spanning over six decades of championship chess. But this book is by two authors, experienced Russian CC-GM, Sergey Grodzensky researched and wrote the chapters on the 21 Soviet Championships whilst providing a very candid and informative introduction to each event. It is no mere feat to unearth crosstables, games, information on players and photos from such a long period, but both authors have done an admirable job in obtaining a very concise and highly interesting account of all the championships. The crosstables from each event are complete along with 28 photographs in the centre of the book. Included with the book is an added attraction, unrivalled before, a CD with 1433 games from the championships and over 3000 games from other USSR competitions, extra photos and other HTML content all compiled by Harding. The nicely bound large format book of 160 pages provides a “Roll of Honour”, a small biography on each contestant, statistics, openings, combinations and with a complete index of games this book covers everything. What I particularly like about Chess Mail books is the clarity - the notation, the diagrams, the commentary is superb and this book is one of the best. Great credit must be given to Harding as the premier author of CC books in an age when some less than knowledgeable people have talked about the “death” of CC, Harding has proved this to be what it is, a myth and I would urge all CC players to get behind this and future publications from the Chess Mail stables. Very highly recommended.
