Michael Gluzman (Vic) will represent Oceania at the next FIDE world championships, as will Ngan Phan-Koshnitsky (SA) in the women’s world championships.

They qualified by winning the Oceania zonal and women’s zonal tournaments held at the Palm Meadows Radisson on the Gold Coast last month between players from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Mark Chapman (SA) looked the goods from the start, winning his first four games and drawing the next two before losing to Gluzman, to finish with 7/9.

Gluzman started with 1/3 then won six straight to tie with Chapman.

He then won the two-game playoff (one win, one draw) to qualify for the world championship.

Phan-Koshnitsky played strongly throughout, edging out top-seeded Irina Berezina (NSW) by a half-point to win with 7/9.
