FIDE Commerce, the new commercial arm of the World Chess Federation, has announced the introduction of the FIDE Grand Prix beginning next year, a series of world-wide tournaments with bonus prizes for players of up to $2 million. Details were sketchy and inclusion of the great European tournaments was a little premature  the organisers of Linares, Wijk aan Zee and Dortmund issued a joint statement to the effect that they would remain independent. The FIDE response was heavy-handed, with competing events planned in the capital cities of the countries involved. Good news for the second-tier players, but it remains to be seen which way the top guns jump. The first clash came last month, when the FIDE World Cup of Rapid Chess in Cannes overlapped the traditional Amber Tournament in Monaco, some 50km away.
