Dispensing with such formalities as consulting players or national federations, the Presidential Board of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) unveiled its new time controls for FIDE events - the traditional seven-hour sessions were reduced to three hours plus 30 seconds per move. The storm of protest, including preparation for a court challenge by the powerful German and Dutch federations, led the FIDE president to foreshadow a compromise, using the new times in the world championship but as a recommendation only in other events pending further negotiations.

Round 11 of the German Intercity League saw Luebeck scrape home against its closest rivals Porz, to take a three-point lead overall and, barring disasters, a win in this year’s series.
