Knox Grammar attracts 414 players

The Schools Chess Challenge held at Knox Grammar was a resounding success with 414 participants. 

The Secondary Schools division (40 teams) was won by the powerhouse Sydney Grammar team (Michael Lip, Kuan-Kuan Tian and Ken Xie).

Trinity Grammar was a clear second with James Ruse Agricultural High School third. 

In the Primary Schools (98 teams) Knox Grammar defended their title from last year. 

The team of James Cronan, Kevin Kemsley and Stephen Priest were convincing winners. 

Equal second were Double Bay and Sydney Grammar St Ives C! 

It is worth noting that there were four Sydney Grammar St Ives teams amongst the first fifteen making this school of enormous depth. 

The NSW Interschool Girls Teams Challenge was held at Brigidine College, St Ives last Wednesday. 

The event attracted 260 players in 65 teams. 

The leading teams in each division were - Open - 1st Abbotsleigh 4, 2nd PLC 6, 3rd North Sydney Girls. Primary-1st Summer Hill 2, 2nd Balarang 1, 3rd Kincoppal 1. Junior - 1st Abbotsleigh 2, 2nd Brigidine 1, 3rd Abbotsleigh 1. Rookies- 1st PLC 1, 2nd Roseville 2, 3rd Roseville 1. 

The NSW Junior league is organising coaching, fun tournaments, NSW Girls and Sydney Junior Championships between 3rd and 12th October.

Greg Canfell drew with top seed Raul Samar by perpetual check in 22 moves in the fifth round of the NSW championship at Parramatta RSL Club. 

Kerry Stead lost to Canfell in the first round but has won his next four games. 

There are 4 rounds to play. Leading scores after round 5:- Greg Canfell 4.5, Kerry Stead 4, Raul Samar and Tim Reilly (Sydney Champion) 3.5. 

Kerry Stead led the University of NSW 'A' Team to victory last week in the Australian Universities Teams Championships held at University of Sydney. 

International Master Irina Berezina-Feldman and her brother Victor Berezin shared first place with 6.5 out of 9 in the Hakoah Club Championship at Bondi. 

Theos Rippis and Gareth Charles were 3rd equal with 6 points. The supporting event was jointly won by Arkadi Rozentsvaig and Clive Lane. 

The Berger Cup tournaments start on Monday October 8th at Hakoah Club. 

The 21st Fisher's Ghost Open tournament also starts on Monday October 8th at Campbelltown Catholic Club. 

International Master John-Paul Wallace of Campbelltown won the 81 player Gold Coast Classic Grand Prix Weekend tournament scoring 6.5 out of 7. 

IM Stephen Solomon and Sean Karita 6 points. IM David Smerdon, Michael Davidovic and Nik Stawski 5.5 

International Master Alex Wohl of Sydney has scored 6.5/7 in the Santa Olaya Open International tournament in Gijon, Spain. 3 players share 2nd place a full point below Wohl. 

The European Club Cup in Crete with 39 teams from 24 countries was won by 'Norilsky Nikel' of Russia.  

The team included 5 young grandmasters rated above 2600 - A.Grishuk, S.Rublevsky, V.Zviagintsev, V.Malakhov and A.Rustemov.  

The event was played with a slow time control which is still preferred by the majority of leading players.
