Djuric Wins Australian Openby Peter Parr
45 year old Grandmaster Stefan Djuric of Belgrade has convincingly won the Centenary of Federation Icon 2001 Australian Open Championship at Rydges Lakeside Canberra.
Djuric won the first seven games and drew the last four to finish half a point ahead of the top seed 40 year old Grandmaster Ian Rogers of Sydney.

Australia's two leading juniors International Masters Zong-Yuan Zhao aged 14 from Coffs Harbour and David Smerdon aged 16 from Brisbane both met strong opposition and finished 3rd - 8th equal with two strong grandmasters Alexander Volzhin and Abhijit Kunte as well as International Masters Peter Pisk and Gary Lane.
Zhao beat IM Michael Gluzman in the final round and David Smerdon beat IM Mark Heidenfeld. Australian Champion GM Darryl Johansen, FIDE Master Tim Reilly and Australian Junior Champion 15 year old Justin Tan were half a point behind Zhao and Smerdon.
