China leads USA 16-14
The USA - China Chess Summit is a series of four matches (10 boards - 6
open,2 women,2 junior) being played in Seattle,Washington,USA.
Ten per cent of China's population play Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) but the
international game of chess has become very popular in China during the last
25 years. China started the series as favorites as the top 6 boards appeared
evenly matched but the Chinese Women and juniors were considerably higher
USA won the first match 5.5-4.5,the second match was drawn 5-5 and China
decisively won the third match 6.5-3.5 giving China an overall lead of 16-14
with the final match being played today. The score on the top 6 boards so
far is USA 9.5 China 8.5,women- China 3.5 USA 2.5 Juniors- China 4 USA 2.
Ye Jiangchuan (China) has scored a win and two draws against Boris
Gulko(USA) on board one.
Leading final scores in the 2001 National Open in Las Vegas last week ( 255
players including 33 grandmasters,6 rounds) Vladimir Akopian (Armenia) and
Zhang Zhong (China) 5.5. Former NSW Champion Michael Ginat scored 3.5 points
in the event including a draw against Grandmaster Qin Kanying (China).
International Master John Paul Wallace has scored 6 out of 6 in the
Greenfield Cup at the Hakoah Club, Bondi. There are 3 rounds to play.
Greg Canfell has taken the sole leader with three out of three in the City
of Sydney Championship at Ashfield. Canfell beat Simon Quick in round 3 and
the other joint leaders Richard Valenti and Johny Bolens drew. Eight players
including top seed Tim Reilly are half a point behind Canfell with 6 rounds
Grandmaster Darryl Johansen has won the Ballarat Begonia long weekend
tournament for the 12th time. Johansen won this year's event very
convincingly by winning the first six rounds allowing only a draw in the
last round against Igor Bjelobrk.

A seven round weekend tournament will be held at Toukley RSL Club on
Saturday and Sunday for players rated below 2000.
The NSW Junior League will be holding a series of one-day "warm-up"
tournaments at different locations around Sydney over the next two weekends.
The tournaments - at Liverpool,Randwick,Lidcombe and Normanhurst - are
intended to give young players an opportunity for some practice before the
start of the interschool teams competitions which commence in second term.
