Anand beats Short in Mexico

Viswanathan Anand,the Official World Champion,defeated Nigel Short,a former World Title Challenger, in the following brilliant game played on Saturday. Anand sacrificed a bishop and Short defended well but his king was too badly placed.

Astana City,the new capital of Kazakhstan is hosting a Super Grandmaster Tournament dedicated to the tenth anniversary of Kazakhstan's Independence. The event which started last night is a double round robin between six players.

World Number 1 Garry Kasparov and World Number 2 Vladimir Kramnik ( The Brain Games World Champion) both from Russia will start as favorites. Three other players are also rated in the World Top 9 - Alexander Morozevich (Russia), Alexey Shirov (Spain) and Boris Gelfand (Israel). The sixth player is GM Darmen Sadvakasov (Kazakhstan) a former World Junior Champion.

18 year old Spanish Grandmaster Francisco Vallejo has won the elite category 13 Capablanca Memorial GM event in Havana,Cuba with a round to spare. Leading scores after round 11 (13 players,12 rounds) F.Vallejo 8/11 H.Stefansson (Iceland) 6.5.

International Master Alex Wohl of Sydney who was leading the category 8 grandmaster event in Cuba with 3.5/5 is sadly in last place with one round to play after losing seven consecutive games. Wohl has now scored 3.5/12.

North Sydney Leagues Club defeated St George Leagues Club 24 - 14 at North Sydney last Tuesday evening. Malcolm Stephens the easy winner of the recent World Rated event at North Sydney defeated International Master Ben Martin (St George) decisively on board 1. St George were ahead 14-11 on the top 25 boards but lost every game on the bottom 13 boards.
