Johansen wins Doeberl Cup

Grandmaster Darryl Johansen of Melbourne, the Australian Champion, won the first five rounds of the Doeberl Cup Easter Weekend tournament in Canberra and drew his last two games against GM Stefan Djuric and IM Stephen Solomon to finish outright first.

Australian Open Champion GM Djuric, the top seed, lost to IM Gary Lane in a tense last round struggle.

FM Manuel Weeks won the prize for the best score by a player rated below 2150.

The main supporting event attracting 55 players resulted in a five way tie for first place between J.Harp, M.Lip and I.Ilic (all NSW), S.Chow (VIC) and I.Rout (ACT) with 5.5 out of 7.

The 62 player under 1600 rated event was won by veteran O.Hellman (NSW) with 6 out of 7.

Johny Bolens of Sydney arrived in Canberra for the Doeberl Cup but decided to return for the Sydney Easter Cup at Parramatta RSL Club. Bolens won the 24 player event with a picket fence score of 6 out of 6. Angelito Camer and Mariusz Jarek were equal second on 4.5 points. A new 8 round event at the club starts on Saturday.

A record number of 202 players took part in the NSW Junior League's Easter One-Day Tournamant last Thursday. Four players Andrew Chan,Ronald Yu,Hoi-Ming Chan and Nicole Solomon,tied for first place each with 7 out of 8. The NSWJCL will hold a two day tournament on Thursday and Friday. The 39 player Darling Downs Open in Toowoomba over Easter was won by Keven Duncan on 6 out of 7.

FM Craig Laird (QLD) won the Port Moresby (PNG) Easter weekender.

The World Championship Oceanic Zonal tournaments are being held this week at the Radisson, Palm Meadows, Gold Coast. The top seeds in the open zonal are M.Gluzman, L.Sandler,Z.Zhao,J.Wallace,V.Feldman,M.Chapman and M.Rujevic. The four highest active rated players in the zone I.Rogers,D.Johansen,A.Wohl and R.Dive are not competing. Australian Women's champion I. Berezina-Feldman is top seed in the women's zonal and N.Koshnitsky is seeded second

Australian number one GM Ian Rogers of Sydney was in the joint lead after 7 rounds of the Neckar Open in Germany. Rogers lost to Russian Grandmaster Konstantin Landa in round 8 and drew with IM Carsten Hoi (Denmark) in the final round.

Rogers final score of 6.5/9 placed him 8th - 17th equal in the field of 102 players.

Australian number three IM Alex Wohl of Sydney finished equal 9th behind 8 grandmasters in the Metz open in France.
