All games drawn in Linares Peter Parr Every game in the first two rounds of the Super Grandmaster Tournament in Linares, Spain has resulted in draws. The top two seeds had a hard fought game in the first round with World Number 1 Garry Kasparov recovering from an inferior position in the following game:
Peter Leko (Hungary) - Garry
Kasparov (Russia) (B97)
In the other first round games former World Champion Anatoly Karpov (Russia) outplayed Alexei Shirov (Spain) in the middlegame but dissipated most of his advantage in time trouble. Karpov finally conceded a draw after 94 moves in an ending of rook and knight versus rook - a well known theoretical book draw. Judith Polgar (Hungary) repelled an attack by Alexander Grischuk (Russia) and a draw was agreed after 47 moves when Grishuk had sacrificed a piece for perpetual check.
The second round was a quiet day with three short draws. Polgar had her first standard time control draw ever against Kasparov in a highly theoretical Najdorf Sicilian. Grischuk-Karpov was drawn in 19 moves. Leko-Shirov reached the endgame by move 14 and the players agreed to a draw 12 moves later.
The six players have each scored two draws in the double round robin event. Two of the greatest players in history, former World Champions Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov, will meet again in the fifth round at Linares on Wednesday evening. Karpov and Kasparov have played 144 games against each other in 5 World Title Matches for an overall score of Kasparov 73 Karpov 71.
