The teams: 1: WA 2: QLD
3:ACT 4: NT 5: NZ NorthNEWS
Voting Monday-Saturday: Following the players' survey, please note that voting will occur on Monday till Saturday. Sunday is a free day. (After players vote on Saturdays, the game positions won't be updated until Monday - so that it's fair to both teams.)
Publicity: An article about this competition appeared in The Australian newspaper recently.
New rule: Moves will have to be posted by midnight. I've made this change because the old rule was creating confusion, and the vast majority of players posted their moves before midnight anyway.
Another new rule: If an even number of votes is received, I'll simply flip a coin to choose between them.
The New Bulletin Boards seem to be having an effect: we're getting some unanimous votes! That's great, simply because it shows that the event is a "teams" event. Details of the new boards have been emailed to players - if you haven't received notification, email broekhuysep@hotmail.com
When you visit this page, please hit Refresh or Reload to see the latest position.
HOW TO VOTE1.Visit this page to see what the latest position is.
2.Discuss the position with the other members of your team, either through your team's bulletin board, or your team's email list. (The location of the bulletin boards, and the email addresses of your team-mates, will be emailed to you). Please note that players are free to decide on their own vote, and should not be harassed or coerced into voting a particular way. Also, players are free to either join in the discussions, or avoid them, at their discretion.
3.Decide on your individual vote, and EMAIL YOUR VOTE
to broekhuysep@hotmail.com
Please use this address only, thanks.
IMPORTANT: your email votes should have the following information in the subject line: the match (eg, WA-SA) followed by the move in full algebraic notation (eg, 1.e2-e4). So a valid vote will have the format WA-SA 1.e2-e4. Please make sure you follow this format or your vote won't be counted.
4.GROUP VOTES: Alternatively, some (or all) of the members of a team may decide on a move jointly, after discussion. To cast a joint vote, send an email as above but also mention the number of votes cast for the move in the subject line. For example, if three WA players jointly decide upon the move 1.e2-e4, the email subject line should read "WA-SA 1.e2-e4 (3 votes)" AND the names of the three team members should be written into the body of the email.
5.Teams vote on alternate days, Monday to Saturday. The latest move will be posted on this page by midday; players in the opposing team then have until 6am the following morning to email their vote, and the move favoured by the majority will in turn be posted at this site by midday.
6.As a backup, team members are also encouraged to post their vote to their private bulletin board - but this is not compulsory.
7.If there are internet connectivity problems, or players believe their email votes will not get through, they may phone the webmaster, Paul Broekhuyse on the following numbers: 0408 824525; 02 4382 4525; and 02 9288 1632.
RULES
1.This is a friendly competition; please approach it in the appropriate spirit.
2.The event will be a round-robin with 10 teams playing nine games. Each team
will play two games simultaneously.
3.If no votes are received from a team, I shall make reasonable efforts to contact players and ascertain their votes.
If this fails, but extenuating circumstances exist, the match may be briefly delayed.
However, if a team repeatedly fails to vote, they will forfeit the match.
4.The use of chess programs such as Fritz is strongly discouraged.
Players are strongly encouraged to rely on their own analysis and ingenuity.
5.The rules of this competition will be applied flexibly, with due consideration for the difficulties faced by certain teams.
6.In the event of a dispute or problem, the webmaster shall have the final decision. He shall consult with relevant players,
and will aim to make decisions which are fair but do not unduly delay the continuation of games.
7.Delays and problems are expected, due to the novel nature of the event, and your patience is appreciated!
8.New players may register during the course of a game, by following the
procedure outlined below.
9.Tied votes: if an even number of votes is received, I shall flip a coin to
choose between them.
JOIN THE COMPETITION!
The Australian Chess Federation - in co-operation with the New Zealand Chess Federation - is hosting an exciting chess event through its website at www.auschess.org.au - and you're invited to play!
The competition will involve open-ended teams of players from each Australian state and territory - as well as New Zealand. Each player will be able to vote for a move when it's his or her State's turn to move.
Voting will be via email, and the most popular choice will be the move played. All you'll need to do is visit the site, select a move, and click a button to send an email indicating your choice.
Each state team will move every second day. And each team will have its own bulletin board, where members can debate the best move. Some lively discussions are expected!
The Australian Interstate Chess Challenge will be just like the famous Kasparov versus the World clash - except that this time, you have a realistic chance of winning!
It's free, it's fun, it's easy - so why not join the team?
The competition starts on April 24, so please sign up now.
To register, simply send me an email and tell me your name, State, and a contact phone number. We need to know this to ensure that people don't vote twice, and don't try to make bad moves for the other side!
We hope you enjoy the contest.
Kind regards,
Paul Broekhuyse
