A few
handy hints for promoting tournaments in the ACF Newsletter. 1. If you put an event on a calendar
somewhere the Editor may come across it or I may not, if you send it to auschessnews@gmail.com
I can’t really miss it. 2. For more than a bare-bones listing it’s useful to
write a short para with the key points and send it
to the above address so that I can cut and paste it; paraphrasing flyers
isn’t viable in bulk and carries the risk of error. 3. Most tournament organisers will find
that the above is the most valuable way they will ever spend ten minutes (see
next column). 4. And
while you’re on a roll, get more free publicity for the event, the
organisers, club, sponsors etc by writing a report after the event, not
necessarily in great detail or at great length, and maybe extract a couple of
good games. Ian

CHAMPIONSHIP by Peter Parr

The Norths Chess Club Second Centenary Australian
Championships (2-13 Jan 2010) - early entry by 6 Dec 2009 - is rapidly
approaching. The Norths venue has more than 3 times this capacity with
ample space. |
It is
of course of the utmost importance that the Australian chess community ensures
that there is a very large entry to justify the large quality venue. Personally
I envisage an entry in excess of 250 players
in the championships, major, minor and classic with large number of entrants
from all states of There
are 8000 chess players competing in the NSW inter-school competition in 2009
and similar numbers in recent years. All youngsters are most welcome in
either the full 11 day events or the Norths Classic
which lasts only one week. All games are finished in the afternoon with no
evening play.
