Editor’s notes

A few handy hints for promoting tournaments in the ACF Newsletter.

1.  If you put an event on a calendar somewhere the Editor may come across it or I may not, if you send it to auschessnews@gmail.com I can’t really miss it.

2.  For more than a bare-bones listing it’s useful to write a short para with the key points and send it to the above address so that I can cut and paste it; paraphrasing flyers isn’t viable in bulk and carries the risk of error.

3.  Most tournament organisers will find that the above is the most valuable way they will ever spend ten minutes (see next column).

4. And while you’re on a roll, get more free publicity for the event, the organisers, club, sponsors etc by writing a report after the event, not necessarily in great detail or at great length, and maybe extract a couple of good games.

AUSTRALIAN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP by Peter Parr

The Norths Chess Club Second Centenary Australian Championships (2-13 Jan 2010) - early entry by 6 Dec 2009 - is rapidly approaching.

I have been fortunate to meet leading players from three centuries. I met only one player on many occasions who was at the first and most famous tournament at Hastings in 1895 in the nineteenth century and many in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Do we have a chess historian with the number of entries and location of Australian Championships?

Jan 1969: (top 3 seeds Browne, Flatow, P.Parr) in Melbourne 24 players, 15 rounds no supporting events. Walter Browne won. (entry fee $50 - 40 years ago).

Jan 1976: NSWCA wanted to rent a Church hall at Kings Cross for 50 players. Much larger premises at the Uni of NSW (I was arbiter), 140 players, Serge Rubanraut won - Rogers aged 15 made his first appearance. Teenagers Johansen, West in the reserves event.

Jan 1990: I asked John Baker (Cepacol) for $10,000 for rent for Australian Championship and supporting events and Australian Junior at UTS in Sydney CBD run in two sessions. Sponsorship secured in five minutes. 265 players including 47 in Australian Junior. Room capacity 150 - (2 sessions of 150 each maximum) Johansen 10/11, West, Solomon 7.5 - Johansen best victory.

Jan 1996: UTS in Sydney CBD - 198 players - Guy West 1st

Jan 2008: Parramatta - the last Australian Championship, 139 players - Solomon is current champion.

The venue at Norths (near Sydney Harbour Bridge) is massive.

The chess club President is barrister Paul Glissan, a chess player for half a century and a former unofficial co-champion of Antarctica. After lengthy negotiations with the club Paul secured  the venue in January 2009 for January 2010.

The main playing area is the air-conditioned celebrity room which has a seating capacity of over 500.

There is a large analysis room in addition to the celebrity room.

I attended the club's presentation night with about 450 others in the celebrity room a few months ago. (Fred Schuetz head of the Norths 2010 and Manly 2009 organising committees deservedly won a major award) - there was ample space for more people in the room. This is surely the largest venue ever for a chess tournament in Australia's history - and very close to the Sydney CBD.

The venue capacity for most national championships is 150. Major Town Halls Australia wide are not large enough to fit 150 players comfortably (eg Melbourne 1972) or the players are squeezed into the area available with no room between rows and boards - very uncomfortable.

The Norths venue has more than 3 times this capacity with ample space.

It is of course of the utmost importance that the Australian chess community ensures that there is a very large entry to justify the large quality venue.

Personally I envisage an entry in excess of 250  players in the championships, major, minor and classic with large number of entrants from all states of Australia and some from overseas. There is much to be done over the next few weeks by members of the organizing committee and all Australian chess enthusiasts to ensure a large entry - so much space. Many schools with chess teams in the area to be contacted as well as juniors Sydney wide. Adult players and clubs to contact. Early entries appreciated and please encourage all your friends to play.

Sometimes the national championships are held in distant locations. Now is the time to play as Sydney are holding the events in Jan 2009 and Jan 2010 - they may not be held again in Sydney for some years if the other States take up their options on a rotational basis.

The venue can take 500 so we need players from all areas and all ethnic backgrounds.

There are 8000 chess players competing in the NSW inter-school competition in 2009 and similar numbers in recent years. All youngsters are most welcome in either the full 11 day events or the Norths Classic which lasts only one week. All games are finished in the afternoon with no evening play.

Last time I directed the Easter Doeberl Cup (20 times Chief Arbiter!) more than a decade ago there were 100 players in the Under 1600 event. The under 1600 events at Norths will attract large entries.

All juniors are able to compete at Norths with the Australian Junior starting a few days later in Tasmania. If we can fill the venue at Norths to its capacity this will set a very good example for future national championships as well as help to secure very large venues and expand our chess horizons.

Hundreds of players and friends in the club using all the club facilities together with the publicity will be very good for the game.

In order to encourage entries all participants in the championship, major, minor and Norths Classic will be entitled to a  25% discount on all products (over 3000 different items) from Chess Discount Sales, 72 Campbell St, Surry Hills,Sydney for the month of January 2010 as part of our sponsorship for the championships. The more you spend the more you save!

The entry fees for 11 days are lower than the last Australian Championship. The leading Australians receive conditions from the organizers – no grandmaster received any accommodation or appearance fees or any conditions in the latest British Championship.

btw Any offers for the Jan 2011 Australian Open or Jan 2012 Australian Championships?

TOURNAMENT REPORTS

2009 Gosford Open, by Gary Russell

The Gosford Open chess tournament, held on the weekend of Saturday 31st of October, and Sunday 1st of November, was an outstanding success.

Yet again, the Gosford Open proved to be a highlight on the chess playing calendar of New South Wales. 1st Place, in the open section, was won by Max Illingworth, 16 years old, scoring 6.5 points out of a possible 7 points; a future grand master in the making. Max had outplayed strong competition, losing no games, and drawing only one: with John Curtis, Fide Master.

Central Coast Leagues Chess Club was well represented in the field with: John Curtis (Fide Master), Allen Robinson (winning the Lloyd Fell Senior Shield and equal 1st in the under 1400 section), and Neil Clark (equal 1st in the under 1400 section).

The youngest three players competing were: Jasper Hong (8), Joseph Damaschino (9), and Paul Russell (12, from Kariong); proving that the Gosford Open Chess Tournament is a competition that all age groups can enter.

Chess on the Central Coast is well supported with Central Coast Leagues Chess Club, Mingara Chess Club, and the Ettalong Chess Club, as well as active chess clubs in quite a number of primary and secondary schools.

The Central Coast Leagues Chess Club wishes to thank the Central Coast Leagues Club for their sponsorship of the Gosford Open, the rich prizes attracting competitors from Sydney, Newcastle, and Canberra.

The next major chess tournaments, on the Central Coast, is for juniors: One Day Primary School tournament (Gosford on 17th of November, and Wyong on 19th of November) organised by the NSWJCL, and the Mingara tournament (in January) organised by the Mingara Chess Club.
