2010 AusJCL International Junior and JETS Selection
Applications Dear All Juniors, Parents and Chess friends (and
cheerleaders), It seems I have volunteered my services to act as the AusJCL Selections Administrator for 2010. And it seems
that I will also be handling the JETS applications as well. I will be posting
information to the ChessChat thread "AusJCL International Junior and JETS Selection
Applications" see here. I am not taking over the AusJCL
website and so will not be posting information there. If and when a suitable
webmaster is "volunteered" I will liaise with her/him. However, in
the interim, whatever is posted here will also be posted on my AusJunior blog: http://www.australian-junior-youth-chess.blogspot.com/
I will try to be more forthcoming this year with information on Selections
and will post "I don't know" if I really don't know. I will
probably not answer queries on ChessChat not engage
in extended discussions on ChessChat. If there is any queries, I can be contacted at wengnian.siow8@gmail.com. Thank you. AusJCL Calendar (National as well as
International) I have received the following calendar of events from GM
Ian Rogers. Please note that the dates for Fide events are subject to changes
and I will try to post the changes if and when I know of them. Please consult
the ACF by-laws: ACF selection by-laws. Please note that applications for
selections as Australian junior representatives for International events has
to be in on or before 31st
March 2010. The 2010 Junior

the ACF Selection by-laws as a guide for any application. Please send
applications by email to wengnian.siow8@gmail.com or by post to PO Box 474
Gladesville NSW 1675 (Attention: Weng Siow (AusJCL)). More

for FIDE junior events such as the World Youth Championships that permit more
than one person to be endorsed by their national federation to enter
that event (“a FIDE junior event”). 5A.2 A person will not be endorsed by the ACF to enter a
FIDE junior event unless that person has applied for selection
under this By-law. 5A.3 Before voting under clause 7 on applications for
selection for a FIDE junior event the selectors are to determine, in
respect of each applicant for selection, if that applicant is strong enough
to play in the event. 5A.4 Each selector is to make that determination within
a time fixed by the Selection Co-ordinator when the information is provided
to the selectors under clause 6. 5A.5 The Selection Co-ordinator is immediately to inform
an applicant, who is determined by a majority of the selectors not to be
strong enough to play in the event, of that determination. 5A.6 A determination under clause 5A.3 and 5A.4 is not
subject to appeal under clause 9. 5A.7 The remaining applicants for selection are to be
ranked in accordance with clause 7. 5A.8 The applicant ranked first is to be endorsed by the
ACF as its official selection entitled to receive free accommodation and
other benefits provided by the host federation under the FIDE rules applying
to the event. 5A.9 Each other ranked applicant is entitled to
endorsement by the ACF as an official selection to enter the event at his or

Gibtelcom Chess Festival Nine players tied for first place on 7.5/10 in the 8th
Gibtelcom Masters in Gibraltar (26 Jan – 4
Feb): in tie-break order they were Jan Gustaffson
(Ger), Michael Adams (Eng),
Francisco Villejo Pons (Esp),
Chanda Sandipan (Ind), Gata Kamsky (USA), Etienne Bacrot (Fra), Sergei Movsesian
(Svk), Gopal Geetha Narayanan (Ind) and (the only non-GM) Alex Lenderman (USA). The top four played a knock-out sequence of two fast games (10
minutes plus 10 seconds per move) and an Armageddon game (five minutes to
four but White needing to win), with Adams winning the final against Vallejo
Pons. Ibrahim Ogada-Osir (Aus) and regular
visitor Henrik Mortensen (Den) both scored 4.5. The
Press Office advises that Boris Spassky has been here throughout the festival and taken
part in our live-streaming analysis of the games and this can still be viewed
on our website. He spoke to our commentator Stuart Conquest for several hours.
Also here straight from his win in Corus and visiting the tournament in which
his sister has been playing is World No.1. Magnus Carlsen. See link for the official
site which has a number of photographs and videos plus the full results. World Blitz Championship As reported previously, qualifying stages of this event are
taking place in January and February. A number of preliminary results are up
on the tournament site here though the players
are competing under “handles” rather than real names. Presumably
it is intended that the successful competitors will be identified by name at
some point. |

From Peter Parr Australian Open 2011
& Australian Junior 2011 By Peter Parr (NSWCA President) No decision has yet been made where the January 2011 Australian
Open or the January 2011 Australian Junior Championships will be held. I note the recommendations for the Australian Junior (9 rounds,
U14 and U12 5
days, U10, U8 - 3 days) and suggest the following schedule if all events are
held in one location eg. Norths
near Of course the events may all be in other cities but time marches
on and with such a fantastic venue (capacity 1000 players in 2x 500 players
sessions) I think serious early consideration should be given to this and
other proposals. Note open and junior do not overlap. Juniors could play in both. National Conference/prize giving etc in very large analysis
room, open 2-13 Jan 2011, Junior 3-10 Jan 2011. Rapid Play on Saturday and Sunday in
