JUNIOR CHESS - AusJCL News and Notices by Weng Nian Siow

2010 AusJCL International Junior and JETS Selection Applications

Dear All Juniors, Parents and Chess friends (and cheerleaders),

It seems I have volunteered my services to act as the AusJCL Selections Administrator for 2010. And it seems that I will also be handling the JETS applications as well. I will be posting information to the ChessChat thread "AusJCL International Junior and JETS Selection Applications" see here. I am not taking over the AusJCL website and so will not be posting information there. If and when a suitable webmaster is "volunteered" I will liaise with her/him. However, in the interim, whatever is posted here will also be posted on my AusJunior blog: http://www.australian-junior-youth-chess.blogspot.com/ I will try to be more forthcoming this year with information on Selections and will post "I don't know" if I really don't know. I will probably not answer queries on ChessChat not engage in extended discussions on ChessChat. If there is any queries, I can be contacted at wengnian.siow8@gmail.com.

Thank you.

GENERAL NEWS

FIDE-Rated Tournaments

Jamie Kenmure has asked that details of FIDE-rated tournaments in Oceania be sent to him at jchess7@gmail.com for inclusion on the Oceania web site. Presumably this is in addition to and not a substitute for submitting registrations and final results for rating to Greg Canfell.

Other lives

Who established the St Kilda Chess Club and represented Australia in the World Bridge Championships in 1982, was a National Chess Master and Bridge Grand Master, and named as Australia Day Ambassador in Victoria for 2010, asks Milan Ninchich who supplied this link with the answer. (The question is a little misleading as the national master title is evidently not Australian).

OVERSEAS TOURNAMENTS AND NEWS

Corus

The 2010 Corus tournament at Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands (15 – 31 January) opened sensationally with Alexei Shirov (Esp) winning five straight games against players who ultimately finished towards the rear of the table. However he was unable to maintain the pace and the event was won by Magnus Carlsen (Nor) with 8.5/13, despite a loss to Vladimir Kramnik (Rus) who also held the lead for a while.

Kramnik and Shirov finished equal second on 8 from World Champion Viswanathan Anand (India) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) 7.5. Anand beat both Kramnik and Shirov but drew all his other eleven games.

Although the three Dutch representatives finished at the bottom of the standings, local Anish Giri took out the B Group and promotion to next year’s top section, while Li Chao of China won the C Group.

See link for the official site.

Gibtelcom Chess Festival

Nine players tied for first place on 7.5/10 in the 8th Gibtelcom Masters in Gibraltar (26 Jan – 4 Feb): in tie-break order they were Jan Gustaffson (Ger), Michael Adams (Eng),  Francisco Villejo Pons (Esp), Chanda Sandipan (Ind), Gata Kamsky (USA), Etienne Bacrot (Fra), Sergei Movsesian (Svk), Gopal Geetha Narayanan (Ind) and (the only non-GM) Alex Lenderman (USA).

The top four played a knock-out sequence of two fast games (10 minutes plus 10 seconds per move) and an Armageddon game (five minutes to four but White needing to win), with Adams winning the final against Vallejo Pons.

Ibrahim Ogada-Osir (Aus) and regular visitor Henrik Mortensen (Den) both scored 4.5.

The Press Office advises that Boris Spassky has been here throughout the festival and taken part in our live-streaming analysis of the games and this can still be viewed on our website. He spoke to our commentator Stuart Conquest for several hours. Also here straight from his win in Corus and visiting the tournament in which his sister has been playing is World No.1. Magnus Carlsen.

See link for the official site which has a number of photographs and videos plus the full results.

World Blitz Championship

As reported previously, qualifying stages of this event are taking place in January and February. A number of preliminary results are up on the tournament site here though the players are competing under “handles” rather than real names. Presumably it is intended that the successful competitors will be identified by name at some point.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

From Peter Parr

Australian Open 2011 & Australian Junior 2011

By Peter Parr

(NSWCA President)

No decision has yet been made where the January 2011 Australian Open or the January 2011 Australian Junior Championships will be held.

I note the recommendations for the Australian Junior (9 rounds, U14 and U12  5 days, U10, U8 - 3 days) and suggest the following schedule if all events are held in one location eg. Norths near Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Of course the events may all be in other cities but time marches on and with such a fantastic venue (capacity 1000 players in 2x 500 players sessions) I think serious early consideration should be given to this and other proposals.

Note open and junior do not overlap.

Juniors could play in both.

National Conference/prize giving etc in very large analysis room, open 2-13 Jan 2011, Junior 3-10 Jan 2011.

Rapid Play on Saturday and Sunday in Sydney will attract a massive entry.
