OLYMPIAD
APPEAL - President’s Message
|
The ACF
Executive committee is very pleased to report that membership of the
Australian Open and Women’s teams for the coming Olympiad in
Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, has now been finalised, with all but one of the
originally selected players having confirmed availability to represent
Australia in this great event. The
teams now registered are: Open Team 1. GM
Zong-Yuan Zhao (NSW) 2. GM
David Smerdon (ACT) 3. IM
George Xie (NSW) 4. GM
Darryl Johansen (Vic) 5. IM
Stephen Solomon (Qld) Captain
- IA Manuel Weeks (NSW) Women’s Team 1. WIM
Arianne Caoili (Qld) 2.
Giang Nguyen (SA) 3. WIM
Biljana Dekic (NSW) 4. WFM
Emma Guo (ACT) 5. WFM
Vaness Reid (NSW) Captain
- IM Leonid Sandler (Vic) While
the honour of representing one’s country at the chess equivalent of the
Olympic Games or the World Cup is certainly real, so are the sacrifices our
team members will make in the form of travel expenses, lost study time and/or
forgone earning opportunities. To
offset some if not all related expenses, the ACF has again launched the biennial
Olympiad Appeal and, as usual, contributions large and small will be
acknowledged and greatly appreciated. Because
this year’s Olympiad begins earlier than usual, a special request is
being made for earlier-than-usual contributions. The
Appeal is being coordinated once again by former Chess Association of
Queensland administrator Ian Murray, who has reconstructed the Appeal website
at http://www.acfappeal.aunz.org,
where convenient and secure methods of contributing include Paypal and other
on-line banking systems, and where donations are recorded and progress
towards the estimated target of $20,844 can be monitored. Using
the ACF’s traditional quota formula, contributions from each State to
meet this target would be:
In
addition to donations from individuals, the ACF is hoping once more for a
special effort by all affiliates to create fundraising opportunities such as
simultaneous exhibitions, blitz tournaments and the like, and for organisers
of coming school, club and State events to raise awareness of the appeal
during opening and prizegiving ceremonies. Any
reader able to contribute ideas, time, energy or funds to assist the Appeal
is most welcome to contact the coordinator, Ian Murray acfappeal@optusnet.com.au,
or his or her local State Association or ACF Council delegate, whose contact
information may be found via the ACF website at http://www.auschess.org.au
Australia
has a fine record of consistent performances at FIDE Olympiads and, with
three GMs in the line-up, we have a great chance of a best-ever result. With
your help, the same might be said of the appeal total. Gary Wastell (ACF President) A short appeal message
is available at the ACF web site as a landscape or portrait graphic which can be pasted into newsletters, as a PDF which can be cut into quarter-page handouts for clubs
or tournaments, or in HTML. The regular Olympiad update is below. |

The
following was submitted by Allan Menham (Qld) – it is unclear whether it
is intended to be creative or autobiographical. Chess
poem for the wife or partner!! There’s something you must know About your mate And this game of chess For which I now confess Before, alas, it is too late. If suddenly you fear He’s stopped calling you dear His mind is elsewhere Alas! With a Queen. So then you tell him, The Queen, the only woman on the board Is the most powerful of them all Knights and bishops alike At her moves suffer their downfall. But remember this, ‘twas Henry the Eighth who played the game but not six wives could he tame as elsewhere he went to
play. So ask your mate When he returns where have you been? Come clean. And if he were to hesitate Just whisper in his ear: “Check mate!” And never again Will he be late! Chess
vows for the new bride!! You have today taken holy vows in wedlock. There’s something you must know About this game of chess For which I must now confess Before those present you must confirm your
allegiance to the Chess fraternity by taking these vows. (name of
bride)………. Will you say “I will” after each
declaration: Will you accept the chess wife’s ode? Will you be a dutiful chess wife? Will you acknowledge that chess comes first in his
life? (after his wife of course!!)? Will you allow him to continue his chess duties as
a Chess Club President or other Chess Office? Will you allow him to go to all his chess club
activities? Will you allow him to go to all chess tournaments? Will you praise him when he wins games? Will you console him when he loses games? Will you regularly polish his chess pieces to keep
them spic and span? Will you be ready to accompany him to all chess
activities if he so wishes you to do so? Will you always give him adequate money to enable
him to continue to enjoy chess? Having now committed yourself to the life of a
chess wife you are empowered as follows: When he returns home late Ask him: where have you been? Come clean. And if he were to hesitate Just quietly whisper in his ear: “Check mate!” And never again Will he be late! |
