Reports of Recently Completed Grand Prix Tournaments

Newcastle Open 2007

George Lithgow reports. The Newcastle Open run over the weekend 17 to 18 February 2007 was a great success, drawing entries from Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Taree, Laurieton, Armidale, Dubbo, Toukley and "believe it or not" an entry from Norway, Emil-lion Nomat.

We were also graced by the entry of the International Master Mr Gary Lane. Alex Momot, the blind player from the Taree area also participated. The event was contested in a wonderful spirit, thus making the Arbiter's job very simple.

We extend our  thanks to all the participants for this. The International Master Garry Lane was the winner on 6/6 points.

Paul Broekhuyse and Jason Hu shared second place with 5/6. Richard Eccles from the Taree area won the under 1600 Prize, one of his victims being Jonny Bolens, who made an uncharacteristic blunder. Michael Weltner was second in this division, so both the under 1600 prize winners came from the Taree - Laurieton area.

Sarah Behne-Smith and Luthien Russell Shared the Under 1300 prize on 3/6 points. In the final round they were almost joined in sharing first place with the hard working Mary Wilkie (1281) of Armidale who went within one second of snatching a win from Rebecca Harris (1706).

Many players performed well above their rating.

Notable here, were Endel Lane1767 PR Mike Weltner 1538 PR, Benjamin Harris 2074 PR, Mary Wilkie.(1605) PR
PR = performance rating. Sadly, no one from the Gosford area participated in the event. Possibly Gosford is too near Sydney and members there are more likely to compete in Sydney events.  But we missed them!

George Lithgow, President Newcastle District Chess Association

Tasmanian Championship 2007

The Championship was played on 10 -12 March 2007 and resulted in a tie between Peter Knight and Tony Dowden on 5.5/7.

The complete results were:
5.5/7 Peter Knight 1995 Tony Dowden 2096
5 Nigel Frame 1774 Alastair Dyer 1637j Charles Chadwick 1713 Kevin Hendrey 1157j
4.5 Kevin Bonham 2004 Glen Gibbs 1772 John Slidziunas 1675
4 Vincent Horton 1383j Reg Harvey 1689 Milutin Ivkovic 1551 Geoff Russell 1386 Graham Richards 1335
3.5 Ross George 1714 Max Rintoul 1350j Sante Bettiol 1351 Janice Martin 1503f Scott Cohen 1468
3 Carey Kuzmic 1332 Dylan Kuzmic 1123 Tony Sturges 1268 Owen Short 1009j Nina Horton 893fj
2.5 James Briant 1005j Nick Hunn UNRj
2 Leo Minol 1144 Nathan Mohr UNRj Alina Krasnicki UNRfj Phillip McKay UNRj Harrison Briant 331j
0 Sebastian Krasnicki UNR

This is the first tie for the title since 1993. The title is shared and there is no play-off. It is the second title win for each player. Dowden was the defending champion while Wright had won in 2003.

Janice Martin is Tasmanian Women's Champion, the first time she has officially held a title that has been unofficially hers since about 1995 but that has only just been reinstated formally by the TCA at this tournament.

Glen Gibbs is the inaugural Tasmanian Seniors Champion.

Thanks to Kevin Bonham for this information.

Toukley White Knight Open 2007

Played over the weekend 10 – 11 March 2007 the White Knight Open was another win for IM Gary Lane on 7/7 ahead of Paul Broekhuyse, 5.5 and Richard Eccles, Ben Ryan and Trent Parker on 4.5.

Director of Play, Keith Farrell reports that “All-in-all a successful tournament thanks to The Toukley RSL management and support staff who supplied a lovely room (made even more spacious by the low numbers, the room could have easily catered for triple the number (as it has in the past) and ensured our refrehments were always at hand. Many thanks also to ACE for providing Sets, Boards and clocks, and not least the players who played hard, uncompromising chess and in the spirit of the sportsmen they are.”

April 2007 FIDE Ratings

Tournament reports for the April 2007 list have been submitted to FIDE and are viewable here. The calculations for these tournaments should be available at the same link in mid-to-late March. Thanks to all organisers and arbiters for their help in producing the reports.

On or around April 2, the full Australian list will be available here, where you can also find the text-file tournament reports, the full Australian lists for previous quarters, and upcoming FIDE-rated events for the July 2007 list. Prospective players are reminded that they must be correctly affiliated with their state association to be eligible to participate.

I am happy to announce that FIDE has recently given national ratings officers access to the FIDE Ratings Server, meaning that tournament registrations, reports, player details, and (most importantly) corrections can be uploaded quickly and easily. There are a very few complicated corrections still to be done, involving the merging and/or deletion of some duplications, but I'm hopeful these will be resolved before the April list is published.

There are now 415 Australians on the FIDE ratings list, and several hundred more with part-ratings (blocks). Listed players can find their individual histories here, while players who may have blocks towards a FIDE rating can email me if they would like to know their current status.

Lastly, all known birth dates of Australian FIDE-rated players have been copied from the ACF master file, but there are still about a third of birth dates missing (the exact date is required but only the year is published). Also, if players would like their photo displayed on the site, FIDE's specs are: "Width 80px - Height 100px OR Width 160px - Height - 200px (preferable)." Please feel free to email me these details, along with any other questions, additions or corrections.

Australians Overseas

There are several Australians who spend much of their time playing overseas. Foremost is GM Ian Rogers. Others include IMs AlexWohl and John-Paul Wallace.

Recently IM David Smerdon has played some tournaments in Europe. He has been studying in Holland for the last six months but has clearly found time for chess. His most notable success was in the recent 23rd Open of Chapelle La Grande in France. This was a monster Swiss over 9 rounds with 608 players ranging from GMs (over 90 of them!) rated 2650 at the top to players rated 1000 at the bottom. In all of this David finished with 5/9 in equal 155 – 266 place though at 166 on tie-break. The overall result was perhaps a little disappointing. But this game in which David claims the scalp of GM Gagunashvili (2611 with a world ranking of 120) would no doubt have pleased him.

David also played in Group A2 of the Aeroflot Open where he finished on 4.5/9 in equal 56 – 77 place in a field  of 139. If that sounds just so-so, note that all of the players except 2 in David's group were either GMs, of whom there were 8, or IMs. In the same event FM Manuel Weeks played in Group B where he came equal 159 – 166 of 168 players with 2/9. In Group C James Attwood fared much better with 5/9 finishing equal 58 – 80 out of 199.

In January, four Australians played in the Gibtelecom Masters held in Gibraltar. This is becoming quite a significant event in what I am told is a very pleasant venue. The tournament was won by GM Akopian (Armenia) on 7.5/9 with GMs Areshchenko (Russia), Nakamura (USA) and Sutovsky (Israel) equal 2 – 4 on 7. Top-placed Autralian was IM David Smerdon, 5.5, equal 29 – 47. Other Australians were Moulthun Ly and GM Ian Rogers 76 – 98 (4.5) and Malcolm Tredinnick 99 – 127 (4). There were 176 entries including many strong GMs and a notably good entry of strong women players, the highest placed being WIM Jovanka Houska(England) and WGM Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria) equal 18 – 28 on 6. Full results are at gibraltarchesscongress.com.

Still  in Europe, David Smerdon won a blitz event in Holland – the Chessvibes tournament - on 11 February -  with 13.5/17 ahead of 6 GMs including Ian Rogers who finished 5th. FM Manuel Weeks also played. There is a report and some good photos of the event at chessvibes.com. There are more good photos at the Chess Vista link from that website chessvista.com. The photos there are entertaining but seem to suggest that blitz makes one look as if you had just drunk about 20 cups of very strong coffee, which may well be true.

Finally, several Australians have entered the 7th Bangkok Chess Club Open which began on 27 March in Phuket and finishes on 1 April. GM Ian Rogers is seeded fourth and IM David Smerdon seventh. Also playing are FM Tim Reilly, Oleg Korenevski, Alexander Malejevich and WFM Cathy Rogers. The Bangkok CC website is at bangkokchess.com but to date (28 March) no results have been posted.
