ANOTHER CHESS MARATHON A REPORT ON THE 2007 DOEBERL AND SIO - PART 2

GM Sergei Shipov (RUS) the top seed

Yes, even for the arbiters it does feel like a long haul sometimes; although obviously not as tough as for some of the players… The Doeberl Cup is actually 4 tournaments in one, for a combined total of around 200 players; and this year’s inaugural SIO attracted 143 players. Nine days of solid chess, at the standard Fischer time controls of 90 minutes each plus 30 seconds per move from the start. It really does feel a bit like running a marathon… But it is worth it when the events produce the sort of fun and excitement we saw at both tournaments this year, with lots of visitors to add spice to the mix; let’s see how the Aussies fared against their foreign rivals!
Part II - Sydney International Open (SIO)
This was one of the biggest and strongest events of its kind in Australian chess history, with 143 players, 9 grandmasters, 9 international masters and a total of 27 titled players. Great work by the chief organisers, Brian Jones and Vasil Tulevski; we hope you succeed in your vision to make this an annual event… A great free venue at Parramatta Town Hall and an excellent support staff helped to make this a wonderful event. What was even better was that it attracted an incredible 35 overseas players, from 19 different countries; and at least one player from each state in Australia. This is pretty unique in Australian chess, I think, and so was bound to produce not just a great tournament but also a few surprises; let’s find out!
Few significant upsets in Round 1; but they began in earnest in Round 2! Sam Chow drew a long game with top seeded GM Sergei Shipov; and Indian Manthan Chokshi drew with seventh seed, IM Zong-Yuan Zhao. FM Igor Bjelobrk was done by ACT youngster Gareth Oliver in a tricky minor piece endgame… In Round 3 the GMs and IMs began meeting, with English IM Simon Ansell upsetting second seeded GM Victor Mikhalevski to score the first of ten $100 prizes on offer for a non-GM beating a GM! IM David Smerdon was a bit lucky to beat Swiss Denis Bucher after spurning a repetition a piece down for some pawns in order to try to force his advanced pawns through for a win. He succeeded, but only after a few stressful moments…
In Round 4 the GMs started meeting: Antic drew a tough rook ending with Timoshenko, and Bakre liquidated to an early draw with Matamoros. Murray Chandler got at Stephen Solomon’s king to beat him, while Ian Rogers beat Gary Lane and David Smerdon allowed a repetition of position against George Xie. Zhao beat Ansell, while there were 2 more $100 prizes for beating GMs: Andras Toth gradually outplayed Darryl Johansesn to win a rook, and Manthan Chokshi shattered Sergei Shipov’s campaign after the latter blundered a bishop to a double pin… After Round 4 there were only three players on 4/4, which became only one on 5/5 after Timoshenko beat Toth in a long bishop ending and Ian Rogers won a thriller in time pressure against Murray Chandler. (Ian may have been a bit lucky, as Murray might have won if he had played the right queen move…). Matamoros and Garbett drew; while Zhao missed a chance to win his queen and pawn ending against Tejas Bakre, the game ending up drawn by perpetual check. David Smerdon and Dejan Antic were up there with Timoshenko on 4.5/5 after they beat Bob Smith and George Xie respectively; while Darryl Johansen could make no progress in his locked position against Manthan Chokshi and had to settle for a draw.

GM Darryl Johansen equal highest-placed Australian.

Round 6 saw Antic and Rogers liquidate on move 26 to a drawn ending, Ian thus joined in the lead on 5.5/6 by Timoshenko after the latter beat Smerdon. Seven players were on 5/6: Antic, Mikhalevski, Chandler, Zhao, Bakre, Bjelobrk and Tomek Rej. Tomek scored a shock win against Stephen Solomon when he trapped Solo’s queen; Bjelobrk won himself $100 for beating Matamoros when the GM walked into a mate after earlier having been winning. After three all GM draws on the top three boards, we were not really any closer to determining a winner: Timoshenko drew with Rogers in a heavy piece ending, Antic drew a balanced middlegame with Mikhalevski and Bakre and Chandler drew a tricky king and pawn ending. Board 4 was also a draw, as Bjelobrk could not quite crack Zhao. All this left Rogers and Timoshenko equal leaders on 6/7 with a surprise packet, Tomek Rej, who fought hard from an inferior position to finally win the exchange and his game against Simon Ansell. Gareth Oliver upset David Smerdon to give himself a great chance for an IM norm.
A third draw in a row for Ian Rogers in Round 8 (this time with Zhao) left Timoshenko in the outright lead on 7/8 with a lengthy win against Tomek Rej. Joining Ian on 6.5/8 were Mikhalevski, who beat Bakre on time in a fairly even position; and Antic, who beat Bjelobrk. Murray Chandler had to settle for a draw with George Xie, leaving them in a huge group of 10 players on 6/8 that also included Zhao, Rej, Johansen, Solomon, Lane, Toth, Matamoros and Goldenberg. All this meant a thrilling finish, which we duly got when Timoshenko gave Rogers and Antic a chance to catch him in equal first on 7.5/9 by agreeing to a draw in a fairly even position with Mikhalevski. Dejan took his chance with both hands, converting a nice White initiative and Murray Chandler’s time pressure into a win; but Ian Rogers faltered against Darryl Johansen, allowing Darryl’s attack through for a rare loss. So Darryl joined a group of 4 players in equal third on 7/9, which included Mikhalevski, Lane and Zong-Yuan Zhao after the latter took a gamble on a breakthrough, threw the dice in time pressure and managed to win his drawn ending against Andras Toth. Gareth Oliver got his IM norm after drawing with Moulthun Ly; well done Gareth!

ACTCA Annual General Meeting
The AGM of the ACT Chess Association was held on Wednesday, 16 May. The Committee reported a generally successful year though there is concern about falling club participation, something in which the ACT is not alone.
Two candidates stood for the position of President – the retiring President, Mossadeque Ali and Dr Stephen Mugford who was one of the organisers of the recent Australian Open Championships in Canberra, among other things. In a secret ballot Mos Ali was elected by 14 votes to 13. The remaining executive positions, except for the Treasurer, were filled unopposed.
Those elected were: Vice President: Stephen Bartlett; Secretary: Carl Parkes; Junior Chess Coordinator: Shun Ikeda. The position of Treasurer is yet to be filled. The retiring Treasurer, Paul Dunn, did not seek re-election.
Until next time...
