OCEANIA ZONAL 2007

The Zonal was played from 5 to 12 May 2007 in Fiji. Though it had finished before our previous issue was published, we did not report it as there was then some uncertainty in some quarters about the results. That matter seems now to have been resolved. We hope to have a report from one who was there soon. Meanwhile here is a short note of the outcome taken from the Fiji Chess Association website and the complete final results.

IM Zong-Yuan Zhao of Australia proved to be the toast of the 2007 Oceania Zonal when he finished the event with 7/9points to qualify for the world cup to be held later this year. IM Zhao was in dazzling form finishing half a point ahead of the competition. FM Puchen Wang of New Zealand gained his IM title while FM Igor Goldenberg and FM Robert Smith gained their IM norms. James Morris and Gene Nakauchi were conferred the FM title.

The Womens competition was a runaway show where IM Irina Berezina of Australia proved that experience was too much for her younger counterparts when she ended the tournament a full point ahead of second placed Alexandra Jule who earned her WIM title while WCM Sue Maroroa of New Zealand and Rebecca Harris gained their WFM titles.

The 2007 Oceania ZonalChess Championships were hailed as a success and congratulations were accorded to Dr. Virgilio De Asa, President of the Fiji Chess Federation.

SACA will also be offering financial incentives for GM and IM players. The current expectation is that GMs will be reimbursed for domestic air-fair to and from the venue (provided they buy the tickets early while the tickets are cheap), will be given free dinner and free entry, and will be guaranteed $300 prize money. IMs will have the same conditions as GMs but will be guaranteed $200 prize money instead of $300, and will not have their travel paid for. Conditions should be negotiated on a player by player basis. Contact Alex Saint (0411 598 314) or George Howard (0414 841 575) for details.

The tournament will be a seven round Swiss, with 60 minutes each plus 10 seconds per move from the start of play. Up to two half point byes may be requested at the start of the tournament. Entry will be $55 for adults and $45 concession for the main tournament and $45 for adults and $35 concession for the Under 1600 tournament. 2007 John Kellner Memorial

Report by IA Charles Zworestine

A disappointing turnout of 30 players competed in this year’s Kellner Memorial at St. George Leagues Club, played over the weekend of 19 and 20 May 2007. Played at the standard weekender Fischer time controls of 60 minutes plus 10 seconds per move from the start, top seed was GM Dejan Antic, with Johny Bolens (seed 2) and WIM Laura Moylan (seed 3) the only other players rated over 2000. No substantial upsets in Round 1, although Michael Ngo did get a crushing attack to beat Mark Baterowicz and unrated Indian visitor Aiswerya Shankar beat John Fearon. Taree visitor Mike Weltner was better, due to his opponent’s weak backward g pawn in the ending, when he offered fifth seed Arthur Huynh a draw; so Arthur was delighted to accept! Blair Mandla was not so happy when he went from a pawn up to a pawn down before forcing a draw with little Oscar Wang; Pierre Guenette was also a pawn down, but forced an opposite coloured bishop ending to draw with another junior, Dmitriy Shurapey; and fourth seed Steven Retallick took a perpetual check draw in a sharp tactical position with Alan Mascarenhas.

Round 2 saw our first major shock, as Laura Moylan erred in time pressure to end up the exchange down in an ending and eventually losing to David A Evans. But Bolens, Antic and sixth seed Michael Dunn all won to be in a group of just five players on 2/2; the others were Evans and Michael Ngo, who scored a second upset when tactics left him a rook ahead against Anthony Villanueva. There were a couple more upsets this round, as Aiswerya Shankar drew with Steven Retallick and Mike Weltner beat Blair Mandla after the latter tried too hard to win; maybe he decided that he preferred a loss to a draw!

Dejan Antic got to 3/3 after he positionally squeezed Michael Dunn to death; he was joined there by Bolens, who took longer but beat David A Evans. Arthur Huynh was on 2.5/3 after Michael Ngo resigned prematurely against him; he obviously thought that Arthur’s four pawns were worth more than his sacrificed piece, but in fact with queens off the board he had much endgame play and should have played on! Pierre Guenette might have beaten Aiswerya Shankar in a major piece endgame due to her weak c pawn, but was not patient enough and allowed a back rank tactic forcing a liquidation and a draw. Steven Retallick drew his third game in a row in an opposite coloured bishop ending against Emma Guo; while John Fearon’s two rooks should have beaten Anthony Villanueva’s queen, but John missed a forced win and ended up having to settle for a draw. Lower down, eight year old Sean Gu won his first game with a crushing mating attack against Mario Pleno.

The big game between the top two seeds occurred in Round 4; and it did not disappoint! Dejan Antic, playing Black, misplayed some tactics to end up in an inferior position against Johny Bolens; but Johny, content with a draw, liquidated to a drawish ending. Dejan did not want a draw, so he then took some risks to try and win and ended up a pawn down; he outplayed Johny from there, won his pawn back into a superior rook and pawn ending and could indeed have won, but misplayed it in time pressure to end up drawing a marathon in over 100 moves (see game below)! So these two still shared the lead on 3.5/4, ahead of Arthur Huynh (drew with Michael Dunn), Michael Ngo (whose two rooks and queen got in to upset Pierre Guenette), Richard Eccles (beat Aiswerya Shankar) and David A Evans (defeated Trent Parker) on 3/4. Mike Weltner upset Anthony Villanueva, who was winning but blundered and then pushed too hard to win a drawn position, so lost instead; Alan Mascarenhas’ tactics upset Mark Baterowicz; Gary Losh shocked Joshua Christensen (Oh My Gosh, Losh Beat Josh!); and 8 year old Sean Gu tactically outplayed Michael Lo to score another stunning upset victory.

David A Evans was no match for Antic in Round 5, losing quickly to see the GM reach 4.5/5; but he still could not shake off Johny Bolens, whose material advantage and superior attack beat Michael Ngo. Arthur Huynh was alone in third on 4/5 after beating Richard Eccles, ahead of three players on 3.5/5: Laura Moylan, Michael Dunn and Mike Weltner. Laura won a longish game against Emma Guo; Michael Dunn beat Alan Mascarenhas; and Mike Weltner upset Pierre Guenette. Blair Mandla drew with Steven Retallick, as did Aiswerya Shankar with Trent Parker. Norm Greenwood used tactics to upset Anthony Villanueva, eventually trapping his opponent’s queen; while John Fearon scored another upset, this time beating Mark Baterowicz.

Much interest was generated by the top board pairings in Round 6: Johny Bolens White against Arthur Huynh, and Laura Moylan White against Dejan Antic. The GM was too strong for the WIM, winning the exchange and some pawns and beating her in a longish game; Arthur vs Johny was even tighter, with Arthur looking like he was doing well until he blundered his queen to a discovered attack! So Dejan and Johny were still equal first on 5.5/6 going in to the last round, with Michael Dunn the new player in third place on 4.5/6 after his attack against Mike Weltner’s queenside castled king led to a won ending pawns ahead. Blair Mandla came from behind to win an ending against David A Evans and reach 4/6; he was joined there by Steven Retallick, who beat Gary Losh. Michael Ngo should have joined them; but in time pressure he failed to win a rook ending a pawn ahead against Richard Eccles, and had to settle for a draw.

So to the exciting last round, and Dejan Antic exploited Steven Retallick’s weak pawns to win and reach 6.5/7. He then waited with bated breath to see if Bolens could beat Michael Dunn, but Johny struggled: behind on time and facing a decisive passed b pawn, he had to sacrifice a piece for two pawns to stop it. He was then lost, but Michael misplayed it, and ended up sacrificing the piece back for two pawns to force a drawn ending. So second for Bolens on 6/7, and Michael had to be content with equal third on 5/7 with Blair Mandla, who upset Arthur Huynh after the latter pushed too hard to win a drawn position and lost instead! Equal fifth/sixth was Laura Moylan (beat Michael Ngo) on 4.5/7; but she had to pool this with the 1600-1800 prize shared by Mike Weltner (upset Richard Eccles), Alan Mascarenhas (benefited from back rank tricks and Joshua Christensen’s premature resignation) and Norm Greenwood (mated with bishop and knight to upset Emma Guo). Under 1600-1800 winners were Pierre Guenette, Mark Baterowicz and Richard Eccles; and the Under 1400 prize was shared by Michael Ngo and Oscar Wang.

Mingara May Major Open

Report by Keith Farrell (DOP/Arbiter)

This was a Myer Tan Chess Class 2 Grand Prix 2007 event.

Thus far this month of May we in NSW have (mostly) had only blitz/tournaments but sandwiched between the Kellner Memorial at St George and the NSW Open at Parramatta was the Mingara Major. Numbers were uncertain at first this being Mingara's foray into the GP and a Class 2 at that which we intended would attract those on the hunt for GP points half-way in the year. Mingara has always had the philosophy of "high(ish) entry but very generous main prizes" and this year being an Open rather than their traditional under 2000 or Under 2100`event should make the trip more than worthwhile and attractive proposition.

As it turned out the entry was low in number but a tough tournament nontheless.

Saturday
Round 1
Proceeded with results going much as should be expected - however many met with stiff opposition, even at this early stage. 2 games almost 'bumped' round 2 off its schedule with young Alex Mehan sacrificing a knight with the benefits he obtained helped him score a long draw with Mike Canfell.

Round 2
Two more players in the mix, one sleepy player and the President of the organising club volunteered 'to avoid having a bye (note that this is not a direct quote - it being more like " ÿep, sure"), The new entrant proceeded to show that not only a late riser his recent years of inactivity had left him rusty, however a few quick games against the arbite soon wore off the biggest barnacles. The President (also the current Wyong district Champion) struggled against seasoned Newcastle player Graeme Deacon. The 'over 2000 club' proceeded to narrow the top-score group to themselves and Sartaj Hans and Alex Mehan (although Alex was a half-point shy). Paul Broekhuyse entertained and impressed some onlookers with his nimble swindle from a very poor position (and lets face it - that is when you want to do such things, yes, you have to watch those long-diagonal Bishops and the mastes they can support).
Amongst others there was a competition of who would Queen-sacrifice first - or not get the chance to sac at all, a Dutch defense gone bad, a positional crush and all in all just about all the varieties that arise from honest and tough struggles.

Round 3
Still fresh and knowing this was the last round today, our competitors gave their all and fought to the last pawn, I proffer as evidence the following :

Almost all players arrived fresh and ready for battle. A no-show for board 1, after winning all on Day 1 transport (or something) may have been just too much ! While some were placing themselves in the tournament strategically others wer juust fighting for survival - swapping off queens early to avoid catastrophe that had happened yesterday or finding holes in your opening knowledge (not a pleasant experience no matter how valuable the lessons learned. Some things learned were somewhat enjoyable when they presented a whole new stepping stone.

There were some blood-curdling attacks and some mis-played middle and end games but only the one draw - only four draws so far while for example the Toukley Open (a smaller tournament) ended up with 15 {a 7-rounder) - 6 in the final 2 rounds. In this round not that many were very long that threatened to play into the next round.

Round 5
And then there were two ! With the chasers(2 in number) a full point behind. This was the business end, except for those vying for the top prize where every move thus far was 'the business end'.

Round 6
Only Six rounds I hear you cry ! We avoid the 'fatigue' blunders that sometimes plague us in the last of these events (and left with only the 'ordinary' blunders in their stead).

Prizes :

First : Igor Bjelobrk
Second : Gary Lane
Equal Third : Johny Bolens, Jonathan Adams and Mike Canfell

Divisional :
1st Division : Trent Parker and Emma Guo
2nd Division : Tony Baldwin

Director - Interclub

Since 2000, the Association's annual interclub teams competition has been conducted at two different locations, with the aim of bringing successful teams from both zones together at the end of the season to contest a finals match or series.

The Association's plans for 2007 aim is to attract teams from Geelong, Ballarat and other western districts to participate in the Western zone and for teams from Dandenong, Morwell and other eastern regions to compete in the Eastern zone.

To ensure that both zones are properly coordinated, the Association is seeking to appoint a person to oversee the work of the directors of the two zones.

The appointee would be expected to liaise with the Executive committee and both zone directors, particularly at times when entries are being invited and received, and when arrangements are being made for finals matches. The Interclub Director would also play a major role in ensuring that competition rules are interpreted consistently at each zone.
