ACF EVENTS 2008-2009

The ACF still has no expression of interest for the Australian Junior Championships 2009. We had heard that the SAJCL/SACA might be interested and, if so, an early written expression would be welcome. A formal bid with full details can come later. The same goes for any other person or body wishing to express an interest.

Expressions of interest should be submitted to the ACF Secretary Jey Hoole at Jey.Hoole@affa.gov.au with a copy to ACF President Gary Wastell at gwastell@netspace.net.au .

ACF OFFICE BEARERS

The following was in our last issue. There are as yet no relevant responses. Please consider.

The ACF Council re-appointed all Office Bearers except for the following:

  • Publicity Director
  • Editor Email Newsletter (content)
  • Olympiad Appeal Coordinator
  • Ergas Training Squad Coordinator
  • Selections Coordinator (Juniors)

The ACF is seeking expressions of interest from anyone wishing to fill any of those positions. Please contact ACF Secretary, Jey Hoole jeydh4@hotmail.com or Jey.Hoole@affa.gov.au or ACF president, Gary Wastell gwastell@netspace.net.au  as soon as possible if you are interested.

I am continuing to act as Newsletter Editor but only for a limited time, say the next couple of issues, so a new Editor is urgently needed. The need for persons to occupy the other positions is self-evident. A proposal for an arrangement to deal with publicity is being considered. Volunteers for the other three positions are needed.

Calling all Chess editors - Want to be the new editor of this newsletter? You will need to be able to collect chess news for our fortnightly newsletter. You will be computer literate, enthusiastic and be keen to edit for clarity and meaning and new ideas are welcome too. If you are interested please contact Gary Wastell now!

AUSTRALIANS OVERSEAS

David Smerdon's Third Gm Norm

Playing in a Czech tournament in Pardubice, david Smerdon has comfportably secured his third GM norm. He is now entitled to be awarded the title conditional upon obtaining the necessary FIDE rating of 2500. Currently the FIDE website shows his rating as 2461 with an expected change of 5.3.

Congratulations to David who has achieved many top-class results, especially over recent months. He richly deserves the GM title!

World Youth U16 Olympiad

The World Youth u16 Olympiad was held in Singapore over 10 rounds from 4 to 12 August 2007. There was a record entry of 34 teams showing that the event is now being taken seriously by a many countries.

Australia fielded 4 teams compared with one last year. Australia 1 was very strong and was seeded number 3 behind Hungary and India. It comprised Moulthun Ly, Junta Ikeda, Zhigen Wilson Lin, Raymond Song and Max Illingworth. There was also a girls'team (Australia 2) headed by Angela Song and two other teams - all of them worthy representatives of Australia.

The final result, after considerable shuffling of places, was a win for India (28) followed by Hungary (27.5), the Philippines (25.5), Uzbekistan (24.5 and Australia 1 (24). This was an excellent result for Australia 1. Though slightly below their seeded position, regard has to be had to the unrealistic seeding of the Philippines at 22 with a team headed by IM Wesley So, easily the best player there, and three unrated players who were actually of about 2200 strength.

Australia 2 finished 21st, Australia 4, 23rd and Australia 3, 26th, all of them giving strong performances.

For all the results see http://www.singaporechess.org.sg/

David Smerdon in Hungary

Following his GM norm event in the Czech Republic, David has gone on to play in the XI. Paks Cup GM Tournament in Paks, Hungary. Being played from 4 to 13 August. It is a 10-player round-robin containing 3 GMs, 1 WGM and 5 IMs. David is seeded 8th but there is very little in rating between him and the players above him.

After 7rounds David is equal 6th on 2/5. He had this spectacular win over IM Mihai Grunberg in round 2.

Aleks Wohl in Spain

Meanwhile, IM Aleks Wohl was having fun in Spain (or so the organisers would lead us to believe) at the XVII Open Internacional de La Pobla de Lillet which ran from 2 to 10 August.

There were more than 60 entrants with 4 GMs and 2 WGMs (who were also IMs) Aleks was ranked 6th.

The 4 GMs duly filled the first 4 places with Aleks in acreditable 7 th place.

2007 ANU Open and Minor: Double Division Downer?

Report by DOP Charles Zworestine

Last year I described the ANU Open as the country’s premier non-divisional two-day weekender; this year, the usual excellent ACT organising team (headed by Shun Ikeda, Paul Dunn and Shaun Press) made this impossible by running the event in two divisions (Open and Under 1600) for the first time! As usual when one makes changes, chess players respond slowly – and numbers were sadly down this year as a result. An overall total of 63: 26 in the Open, and 37 in the Under 1600. The Open was still top heavy, with an amazing 9 titled players (more than a third of the field!) – in ACF rating order, IM Zong-Yuan Zhao, GM Dejan Antic, FM Igor Bjelobrk, IM Andras Toth, IM Gary Lane, WIM Arianne Caoili, FM Brian Jones, WFM Shannon Oliver and WIM Narelle Svuveges – while top seed in the Under 1600 was Bill Egan (1571), with second seed Trent Parker (1546) the only other player over 1500. These players, ranging from far and wide (ACT, NSW, OS, QLD and VIC), were all playing at the usual weekender Fischer time controls of 60 minutes plus 10 seconds per move from the start; how would they all go?

The answer was predictably in Round 1, as the top seeds all won fairly handily; although sixth seed Junta Ikeda had to settle for a draw with fellow ACT junior Yi Yuan, as did Gareth Oliver in a heavy piece endgame with Milan Grcic. Biggest upset was scored by Simon Mitchell, who ended up a piece ahead due to tactics against Andrey Bliznyuk; while Mighty Max Illingworth was lucky not to be upset as well, as Narelle Szuveges missed a forced win in their massive time scramble of an ending. The Minor (Under 1600) saw a much bigger shock, as Trent Parker went down to Australian Under 12 Girls Champion Megan Setiabudi. Once again, it was Megan who calculated the tactics better, checks leading to gain of material (see game below)… In another shock result, Joanne Lee stunned Peter Murphy; she was a piece down, but won it back and ended up checkmating!

Parker, T (1546) - Setiabudi, M (1107), 2007 ANU Minor Round 1 Board 2, 28/07/2007

1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 c5 3.c4 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.Bg5 Be7 6.e3 0–0 7.Qc2 h6 8.Bxf6 Bxf6 9.dxc5 dxc4 10.Nd2 Nd7 11.Nce4 Be7 12.Qxc4 Qc7 13.b4 a5 14.Nb3 axb4 15.Qxb4 b6 16.Bd3 bxc5 17.Nexc5 Nxc5 18.Nxc5 Qxc5 19.Qe4 Qc3+ 20.Ke2 Qb2+ 21.Bc2 Ba6+ 22.Kd1 Rfd8+ 0–1

Zong-Yuan Zhao had to fight much harder to beat Arianne Caoili in Round 2, and indeed should have been dead lost; but in an ending two pawns down he won Arianne’s h-pawn, and his resultant passed h-pawn won him the game in a mutual time scramble. Igor Bjelobrk was not quite so lucky, as his unsound piece sacrifice against Brian Jones produced only half the desired result; BJ could have refuted it and won, but instead played a line that led to liquidation and a dead drawn ending (see game below). Most of the other games went according to rating, as the top seeds just kept on trucking… The Minor was a touch less predictable, as Alana Chibnall’s random sharp tactical style won an exchange and eventually scored an upset against Tamzin Oliver. But there were still 6 players leading on 2/2; and the top seed was still among them…

Jones, B (2062) - Bjelobrk, I (2428), 2007 ANU Open Round 2, Board 3 28/07/2007

1.d4 f5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 Bg7 5.0–0 0–0 6.c4 d6 7.Nc3 Nc6 8.d5 Na5 9.Nd2 c5 10.a3 Ng4 11.Qc2 Bd7 12.Rb1 Rb8 13.b3 b5 14.cxb5 Bxb5 15.Nxb5 Rxb5 16.Bb2 Bxb2 17.Rxb2 Qb6 18.h3 Ne5 19.Kh2 f4 20.gxf4 Rxf4 21.e3 Rh4 22.Kg3 g5 23.f4 c4 24.fxe5 Qxe3+ 25.Nf3 Nxb3 26.Qf5 Nd4 27.Qxg5+ Qxg5+ 28.Nxg5 Rxb2 29.Kxh4 Rxg2 30.exd6 exd6 31.Rf4 h6 32.Ne6 Nxe6 33.dxe6 Re2 34.Rxc4 Rxe6 35.Rc7 a5 36.Kh5 Re3 37.Kxh6 Rxh3+ 38.Kg6 Rg3+ 39.Kf6 Rxa3 40.Rc8+ Kh7 41.Rc7+ Kh6 42.Rc1 Kh5 43.Ke6 Kg5 44.Kxd6 Kf4 45.Kc5 Ke3 46.Kb5 ½–½

Round 3 in the Open saw the top few seeds meet already – and boy, did the sparks fly! In the usual time pressure Zong-Yuan’s ending against Andras Toth looked fairly messy, with passed pawns all over the place; Andras miscalculated in the end, and Yuan won to take the outright lead on 3/3. Even messier was Gary Lane’s draw with Dejan Antic, which settled into a perpetual check in the end after neither player (both down to their last 30 seconds and with kings exposed) would take the huge risks required to win! Gareth Oliver’s win on time in an unclear position against Brian Jones and Igor Bjelobrk’s extra exchange win against Junta Ikeda enabled them to join Lane and Antic on 2.5/3, while Yi Yuan shocked Arianne Caoili by liquidating to a heavy piece endgame draw. Meanwhile the Minor saw yet another surprise, as Sunny Yoon’s extra passed pawn was enough to force a rook endgame win against Bill Egan (see game below). Sunny was joined in the lead on 3/3 by Jey Hoole, who beat James Li; and Erik Jochimsen, who won a piece early to take care of Alana Chibnall.

Yoon, S (1376) - Egan, B (1571), 2007 ANU Minor Round 3, Board 1 28/07/2007

1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e4 e6 5.Bxc4 c5 6.Nf3 Be7 7.0–0 a6 8.a4 0–0 9.Bg5 cxd4 10.Nxd4 Qc7 11.Bd3 Rd8 12.Be3 Nc6 13.Nxc6 Qxc6 14.Qe2 e5 15.Rac1 Qd7 16.Rfd1 Qg4 17.f3 Qg6 18.Nd5 Nxd5 19.exd5 Bf5 20.Bxf5 Qxf5 21.Rc7 Bd6 22.Rxb7 Rdc8 23.Rb6 Rc2 24.Qd3 Qxd3 25.Rxd3 Bc5 26.Bxc5 Rxc5 27.Rc6 Rxc6 28.dxc6 Rc8 29.c7 1–0

The final Saturday game saw Zhao maintain his perfect score and with a good Black win against Antic, where Yuan won a pawn and gradually got at Dejan’s queenside castled king to force mate in the GM’s time pressure. Igor Bjelobrk reached outright second on 3.5/4 after Iggy, also Black, won a nice game where pseudo sacrifices (first of a pawn, then a piece) gained Igor the two bishops and winning pressure in the centre and against Gareth’s king (see game below). Toth and Lane drew a topsy-turvy game where Andras ended up a piece for two pawns up but could not win the ending in mutual time pressure; while Andrew Brown popped a piece against Brian Jones, but still generated enough counterplay to force an unlikely draw! The Under 1600 saw Jey Hoole maintain a share of the lead on 4/4 by winning a pawn and forcing a won ending against Erik Jochimsen; he was joined there by Sunny Yoon, who beat Andrew Farley. The underrated Donald Pandich held Bill Egan to an upset draw to join a large group on 3/4; this group included Alan Chibnall, who ended Trent Parker’s chances with another upset win.

Oliver, G (2166) - Bjelobrk, I (2428), 2007 ANU Open Round 4, Board 2 28/07/2007

1.d4 e6 2.c4 b6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Nf3 Bb7 5.e3 f5 6.Bd3 Nf6 7.0–0 0–0 8.Ne2 Bd6 9.Ng3 Qe8 10.Bd2 Nc6 11.a3 a5 12.Rb1 a4 13.Bc2 Na5 14.Bxa5 Rxa5 15.Bxa4 Ng4 16.Re1 Rf6 17.h3 Nxe3 18.Rxe3 f4 19.Ne4 fxe3 20.Nxf6+ gxf6 21.Bc2 exf2+ 22.Kxf2 Qh5 23.Kg1 Kh8 24.Nh2 Qg5 25.Qf1 Qe3+ 26.Kh1 Qxd4 27.b4 Rxa3 28.Qd1 Qf4 0–1

Excitement abounded on Sunday morning in the Open, as Zhao conceded his first half point to Bjelobrk; Yuan could have won a complicated major piece endgame where his more advanced passed d-pawn was stronger than Iggy’s passed a-pawn, but misplayed it in the time scramble and liquidated to a draw. So Yuan was still outright leader on 4.5/5, while Iggy was joined in second on 4/5 by Gary Lane, who beat Max Illingworth. The next four on 3.5/5 revealed the cream starting to come to the top: Antic (won a rook and bishop ending against Gareth Oliver), Toth (beat Andrew Brown), Caoili (outlasted James Watson) and Junta (out-attacked Adrian Chek). Yi Yuan upset Brian Jones to reach 3/5… The Minor saw Jey and Sunny still joint leaders on 4.5/5 after their longish game ended up liquidating to a drawn double rook and bishop ending with all the pawns on the same side of the board. Tamzin Oliver and Erik Jochimsen also drew on Board 2, leaving Alana Chibnall as the only person on 4/5 (breathing down Jey and Sunny’s neck!) after she continued her excellent tournament by beating Donald Pandich.

Yuan could still not break away after Round 6, where Gary Lane gave him all he could handle; but after a long struggle, in the end Gary had to settle for a perpetual check in a queen and opposite coloured bishop ending. With Bjelobrk drawing quickly with Antic, and Toth taking rather longer to beat Arianne, this left us with a thrilling finish in prospect: Zhao 5/6, Bjelobrk, Toth, Lane and Junta (beat Chris Kevork) 4.5, Antic and Max Illingworth (defeated Adrian Chek) 4… Having earlier been equally close, the Minor suddenly resolved itself after this round, where Sunny Yoon took a full point lead by winning a sharp, quick and convincing game against Alana Chibnall (see game below). Jey Hoole helped him enormously by losing a piece early to Tamzin Oliver, his attempts to complicate eventually landing him in a standard smothered mate instead! Bill Egan and Erik Jochimsen joined Jey and Tamzin in second place on 4.5/6 with wins; clearly they were all still going to have a lot to play for in the last round…

Chibnall, A (1246) - Yoon, S (1376), 2007 ANU Minor Round 6, Board 1 29/07/2007

1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.c4 e6 4.dxe6 Bxe6 5.Nc3 Bb4 6.Qa4+ Nc6 7.Nf3 Qe7 8.a3 Bxc3 9.bxc3 Bxc4+ 10.Kd1 Bd5 11.Rb1 Ne4 12.c4 Nxf2+ 13.Kc2 Bxf3 14.Rg1 Bd1+ 0–1

So to the last round, where Zhao showed why he is the new Australian Number 1 (after Ian Rogers’ retirement) with a convincing win in a neat tactical finish against Junta Ikeda (see game below). The result was outright first for Yuan on 6/7, with Igor Bjelobrk winning the exchange to beat Toth and finish outright second on 5.5. Antic was outright third on 5/7 after beating Andrew Brown, while Ian Rout’s tactics upset Max Illingworth to win Ian his rating group. Arianne Caoili was the best ANU player after her upset win against Gary Lane, who played a quick move without thinking and then watched his position go downhill – he lost all his pawns! The Minor saw fairly quick draws on the top three boards, leaving Sunny Yoon outright first on 6/7 and a traffic jam in second on 5 points.
