ACF NEWS: AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008

The ACF has accepted a request from  the Parramatta RSL Chess Club, which is hosting the Championships, to lower the rating cut-off from 2150 to 2100. The reason is that the short notice might have affected the turn-out for the Championship. The ACF Selection Committee has also been authorised to to determine the number of and eligibility or otherwise of players who are neither Australian Citizens nor permanent residents. This is to allow a small some flexibility in the admission of overseas players to the Championship. The decision was made win the hope that the opportunity for local players to achieve title norms might be enhanced.

 Brief details of the Championships are:
Dates: 2 to 11 January 2008;
Rounds: 11 (2 rounds on each of 3 and 4 January; rest day/Lightning on 6 January;
Time Control: 90 minutes plus 30spm (Fischer);
Venue: Parramatta RSL Club
Events: Championship and Major, the latter incorporating Minor, Senior and Women's prizes;
Entry fees: Championship - $170 ($140 early), concession $140 ($110 early)
Major - $130 ($100 early), concession $110, ($80) early.

The official web site is at http://www.parramattachess.org/auschamps2008/index.html .

ACF OFFICE BEARERS

ACF OFFICE BEARERS

The following was in our last issue. There are as yet no relevant responses. Please consider.

The ACF Council re-appointed all Office Bearers except for the following:

  • Editor Email Newsletter (content)
  • Olympiad Appeal Coordinator
  • Ergas Training Squad Coordinator

The ACF is seeking expressions of interest from anyone wishing to fill any of those positions. Please contact ACF Secretary, Jey Hoole jeydh4@hotmail.com or Jey.Hoole@affa.gov.au or ACF president, Gary Wastell gwastell@netspace.net.au  as soon as possible if you are interested.

I have informed the ACF President that I will finish up as Editor (Content) at the end of this month, that is,the next issue will be my last. If you want to see the Newsletter continue and feel you have the necessary ability please contact Gary Wastell or Jey Hoole urgently.

I should mention that the job is quite interesting and also is what you make it. I am not a natural journalist but my main reason for not continuing is that I have other ACF tasks that I see as more important and more suited to my qualifications. These are being neglected while I have to do the newsletter.

Calling all Chess editors - Want to be the new editor of this newsletter? You will need to be able to collect chess news for our fortnightly newsletter. You will be computer literate, enthusiastic and be keen to edit for clarity and meaning and new ideas are welcome too. If you are interested please contact Gary Wastell now!

ACF SELECTIONS INFORMATION EMAIL LIST

Following suggestions from some of our leading players, I am currently running a backup email list of people interested in receiving calls for applications for selections when these are sent out. I may also use this list to send out advance information about upcoming events for which selections will be called, before the formal selections process has been determined. Players on the list will sometimes receive calls for applications before these have been published in the Newsletter, and it is recommended that all prospective Olympiad applicants for 2008 join this list.

To join this mailout list:

Simply email k_bonham@tassie.net.au  with "join selections mailout list" in the subject field of your email, and I will add you to the list for the next mailout. If you wish to join from a different or any extra email addresses, include a note to that effect. You can unsubscribe or change email address by emailing me at k_bonham@tassie.net.au  at any time.

The fine print:

This list is intended as a backup for the process of announcing calls for selection in ACF Newsletter only. Anyone with an interest in applying for ACF selections (adult or junior) is expected to subscribe to the ACF email newsletter and remain subscribed at all times to the best of their ability. All care will be taken with the upkeep of this list, but as email is not completely reliable and the list will be manually administered, no responsibility for delivery failures of emails sent to the address subscribed will be accepted. Subscribers are responsible for ensuring their email address remains current, and any address that bounces repeatedly will be dropped. This list will not cover junior events.

I hope this list will assist in ensuring more players are aware, well in advance, of upcoming opportunities to represent Australia.

Best regards to all,

Kevin Bonham

ACF Selections Co-Ordinator (Senior Events)

WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

2007, Antalya, Turkey

There is now an official web site for this event. it is http://wycc2007.tsf.org.tr/

2008, Vung Tau, Vietnam, October 2008

FIDE has just published the following site report for the venue

PRESS RELEASE

A delegation consisting of the FIDE General Secretary Mr Ignatius Leong and Mr Geoffrey Borg visited Vung Tau in Vietnam between the 27th of August to the 29th of August to review and inspect the organisational setup for the forthcoming World Youth Championships to be held there in the latter part of October 2008.

A protocol visit was arranged with the Vice Chairman of People`s Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, Mr Vo Thanh Ky. Along with the Director of the Sports Committee, Mr Tran Phuc Loc and a number of other key people from the district, the main points required for the tournaments were discussed. The organising committee will be finalized after a visit to Turkey in November 2007.

The delegation accompanied by the Vietnamese Federation President and a representative from the Vung Tau Sports Council Mr Nguyen Thanh Duan, inspected the hotels in the area as well as the playing venues. The FIDE delegation was quite pleased with the support and preparation so far and a follow up visit was discussed for early 2008.

1. LOCATION

To get to the seaside resort of Vung Tau in Vietnam, the easiest way is to fly to Ho Chi Minh airport and from there via bus transfer to Vung Tau.

Vung Tau is a resort town 125 km from Ho Chi Minh. The town is a long strip approximately 14 km long and 6 km wide. Where the southern tip of town meets the ocean stand two famous mountains Nui Lon (Truong Ky) and Nui Nho (Tao Phung) or Large mountain and Small mountain.

Vung Tau is a very picturesque sea side city of around 300,000 people with some beautiful scenery and adequate entertainment and catering facilities. The place is very clean and safe and staff in hotels are English speaking and service levels are quite high. Weather is normally very warm in the region. In October, however the weather is expected to be clement but not warm enough for swimming in the sea.

The tournament has been acclaimed by the Vietnamese political authorities as being highly beneficial not only for the city but also for the country and therefore a lot of support is being given to a successful organisation of the event.

The web site for the Australian Schools Teams Championships is functional, albeit still under further construction - see www.caq.org.au/astc/index.htm .- the site can also be accessed via the link on the CAQ home page at www.caq.org.au .

Tasmanian Junior individual titles 2007

Southern Junior Championships from Kevin Bonham

This year's southern junior champs held today attracted a field of 30 players, of whom 26 contested the U12 tournament and four contested the Open division.

The turnout in the Open division was affected by an unavoidable date change to the southern highschool interschool qualifier due to a venue cancellation. The interschool qualifier is now tomorrow and some players may have been reluctant to play two days in a row.

The four Open division players played a double round-robin. The Jamie Briant - Owen Short match could have resulted in either player winning the tournament. However in the first game, Briant was easily winning but it all slipped away in mutual time trouble - eventually he reached a drawn ending with king, rook and doubled f-pawns vs king and rook, which then reduced to a drawn king and pawn vs king finish. In the complex second game, Short had queen and some dangerous pawns for rook and knight but allowed a perpetual check by doubled rooks on the seventh rank that could have been avoided, although some lines were rather tricky. Thus Owen and Jamie tied. In the match that decided third place Joel Reynolds beat Joshua Davis in the first game, but Joshua made it onto the scoreboard in the second when Joel was unable to convert KBN vs K.

5 Owen Short (U16 Southern Champion), James Briant (U14 Southern Champion)

1.5 Joel Reynolds (U14 Runner-Up Boy)

0.5 Joshua Davis

The under 12 tournament was very closely contested all day and also finished in a tie. The first upset came in the opening round when Joseph Griggs beat the only rated player in the tournament, Harry Briant. In round two, Sebastian Krasnicki almost defeated his sister Alina, which he has never got close to doing before. Sebastian had rook and three pawns for knight and pawn, but Alina managed to get a queen. Sebastian also queened, but Alina, moving first, was soon able to win the rook and one pawn. With queen and knight against queen and a rather dangerous rook's pawn, Alina appeared to have won when she skewered Sebastian's king and queen - but there was a catch, queen takes queen was stalemate! As any other move returned the initiative to the side with the dangerous pawn, that was exactly what was played.

After four rounds, home-schooled Mason Carter led the event on 4/4 from Alina Krasnicki 3.5 and Ella Thain, Harry Briant, Luke Robertson, Bradley Vince, Louis Mazur and five-year-old Shuqi Yu all on 3. The game between Alina and Mason featured opposite-sides castling with pawn storms by both players. Alina blundered a rook but opened the h-file and forced checkmate anyway to take the outright lead. Harry beat Ella very quickly after a defensive move that threatened mate was overlooked, and Shuqi played very well against Luke and was two pawns up at one stage ... until he overlooked a basic mate Luke had set up on the long diagonal.

In the round 6 top board game between Harry and Alina, Harry won a piece early, and could have gone a rook ahead in one position where both queens were en prise, but errors enabled Alina to fight back until she was the exchange in front. Just when it looked like Alina would pull off yet another comeback (she also won a few games from losing positions in getting 7/7 in a recent girls-only interschool) she too overlooked mate in one and Harry prevailed.

Mason beat Luke and so into the final round Mason and Harry were tied for the lead, and playing off for the tournament and the Under 10 title. After each player had made one blunder, the game was agreed drawn in the middlegame with Harry clearly better but both players content to share the title.

Mason Carter (unr) - Harry Briant (367)

1.e4 e6 2.Nf3 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.d4 c5 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.dxc5 Bxc5 7.Bb5 d4 8.Bxc6+ bxc6 9.Na4 Bb6 (Any of ...Qe7+, ...Qa5+ or ...Bb4+ instead would save the pawn) 10.Nxb6 axb6 11.Nxd4 Qd6 12.Qe2+ Ne7 13.Nf5?? Bxf5 14.0-0 0-0 15.Bg5 Nd5 16.Bd2 Rfe8 17.Qh5 Bxc2 18.Qg4 Re4 19.Qg5 Ra5?? 20.Bxa5 bxa5 21.Rfe1 Rxe1+ 22.Rxe1 Nf6 Taking on a5 is stronger 23.Qe3 h6 24.h3 Draw Agreed.

This resulted in a four-way tie for the tournament after Alina and Louis defeated Bradley and Luke, thus tying for the under-12 title. Rather than use tiebreaks for first, extra medals were on hand so that the ties could stand.
